Bankruptcy Can Help You

If you are here it is most likely because you are considering a bankruptcy and wondering if it is the answer you need. Let me tell you my story then you decide if bankruptcy is right for you.

My name is Dewey Kearney one of the owners of this site 1-800BadCredit.com and 1-800BadCreditBlog.com.

The year was 1989 and I had owned my own business for about 15 years in California. About two years prior to this I made the mistake of buying another business to accompany the first one. This was a fatal mistake because I was lied to by the owner on the profitably of the company. It really only barely maintained itself and never made a profit that you could put in the bank.

Needless to say it destroyed the first business which had been profitable. Add to this the downturn in the economy in 1989 and everything spun out of my control. I always believed that bankruptcy was something that happened to someone else, but the day came where we were clearly boxed in; no way back, up, down or sideways. What to do?

After a lot of consideration and family discussion we made the decision to contact a bankruptcy attorney. Let me tell you, it was the best decision of my life. I wish I could tell you that I inherited a million dollars or won the lottery and we had no more money problems but this isn’t a fairy tale. But I had some breathing room while I figured out my next move. No more harassing phone calls and things did begin to look up. It gave us the room as a family to move ahead with our lives.

Contrary to what most people think, bankruptcy does not destroy your life or your credit. Yes, your credit will take a hit – but hasn’t it already taken a hit from all the late (or non) payments to the creditors? What bankruptcy does is put a stop to the late payments that keep sucking your credit lower. It’s a fixed point in time that will eventually drop off your credit. In the meantime you will be able to apply for credit cards, car loans, etc.

Yes, you will pay a little more in interest while you re-prove yourself to lenders. But that’s going to happen anyway because of all the late payments and over the credit limit cards.

Besides, creditors prefer giving loans and cards to someone that has a bankruptcy because that person cannot declare bankruptcy again for at least 8 years, which means they are guaranteed their money
. And if you are not burdened by past due bills they know you have money. If you just continue being late or not paying at all they don’t want to give you credit because you aren’t handling the credit you have now – AND you could still declare bankruptcy and list them, which they don’t want to happen. Make sense?
